BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – If you visit Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America, you’ll spot some well-known cartoon characters and meet someone special: Edyn Esparza, a 14-year-old entrepreneur and the youngest food vendor at the mall.
Edyn has been passionate about baking since she was just three. By the time she was five, she was already creating baking videos. At eight, she was selling cupcakes at a local car dealership. Her favorite pastime? Riding the carousel at the mall.
Determined to take her love for baking to a bigger stage, Edyn once left a voicemail for the mall, expressing her wish to sell her treats. Her enthusiasm caught the attention of Barb Ross-Hayes, the food manager. “How wild is it that an 11-year-old girl cold calls the Mall of America?” Ross-Hayes remarked. It was a bold move, but Edyn wasn’t afraid.
However, getting her cake pops to the bustling megamall required some hard work. She needed a commercial kitchen and a license. With her parents’ support, she secured a kitchen and studied tirelessly to pass her online test for the commercial license at just 13.
Edyn has an inspiring role model in her older brother, Ethan Esparza, who found success in business at a young age. He was once featured in a story selling lemonade and now runs his own real estate company. “I want to be like him,” Edyn said, “I want to be an entrepreneur.” It’s clear she’s well on her way to achieving her dreams.
Since launching Edyn’s Cake Pops in February, she has received glowing reviews. It’s an impressive start for this young girl with big ambitions, showcasing how passion and determination can lead to success at any age.
According to a recent survey by the Small Business Administration, individuals aged 18-34 are starting businesses at higher rates than previous generations. Edyn is a perfect example of this trend. Her journey illustrates not just personal ambition, but also the growing spirit of entrepreneurship among young people today, inspired by their predecessors and fueled by their unique talents.
