Meet the Adorable ‘Crusty Little Gremlin’: This Uniquely Charming Pet Deserves a Forever Home!

The Dekalb Humane Society (DHS) is known for rescuing animals in need, but their latest guest is truly special. Meet Sewer Rat: a scruffy little kitten with a unique look that has captured the hearts of everyone at DHS.

When DHS first found Sewer Rat, he was alone in a trailer park. Director Teresa Feightner shared, “He was discovered as a stray, struggling on his own.” The team quickly noticed he had a severe case of ringworm, a contagious fungal infection affecting his skin and fur.

Despite his tough start, Sewer Rat’s spirit remains unbroken. Feightner describes him as a “little angel.” He loves snuggling and is surprisingly gentle for a kitten dealing with discomfort. “He has a weird charm that everyone at the shelter can’t resist,” she added.

Statistics show that animal shelters see an influx of pets with medical needs, making them more challenging to adopt out. According to the ASPCA, about 3.3 million cats enter U.S. shelters each year. Many of these animals, like Sewer Rat, are often overlooked due to their conditions.

Sewer Rat is currently in a loving foster home but is still looking for his forever family. The ideal adopter, as noted by Feightner, should be understanding and willing to manage his ongoing treatment. “We know he’s not everyone’s type,” she said, “but he’s healing and proving to be so much more than his appearance.”

The attention Sewer Rat is receiving online is helping raise awareness for other shelter pets with similar needs. It’s a reminder that every animal, no matter their condition, deserves love and a second chance.
