For over 26 years, Kelly Gabriel has dedicated her life as a police officer in University Circle. She’s known as “The Animal Whisperer” for a good reason.

“I always made it a point to be visible,” Kelly said, reflecting on her role. “You can’t really measure how many crimes my presence may have stopped.”
One thing she can measure is the impact she’s had on animals. Over the last 15 years, Kelly has rehomed countless cats and kittens. She’s also rescued various birds from the lagoon, including three geese and a great blue heron. For that rescue, she even rolled up her pants and waded into the water!
Her rescues don’t stop there. Kelly has saved many dogs and puppies, ultimately adopting two herself. Now, after nearly three decades of service, she’s ready to retire.
“I always aimed to make things better for everyone,” she said.
Even as she hangs up her badge, Kelly’s legacy will live on with those she worked alongside and the animals she saved.
“Police officers protect and serve people, but Kelly went a step further. She cared for animals, too,” said Chief Thomas Wetzel of the University Circle Police Department. “She had a true love for all of God’s creatures. It’s no wonder she earned the nickname ‘The Animal Whisperer.’”
“Her dedication to both people and animals was remarkable. Kelly leaves behind a legacy that will be felt not just by her colleagues but by the wildlife in our community as well,” Wetzel added.
