Four newly discovered tarantula species have been placed in their own genus, thanks mainly to their remarkably long male genitalia. These spiders are named after Satyrs, mythological creatures known for their unusual traits.
Dr. Alireza Zamani, a researcher at the University of Turku in Finland, led the team that published the findings in the journal ZooKeys. He noted, “The males of these spiders have the longest palps among all known tarantulas.”
Why the Long Palps?
Unlike mammals, tarantulas have specialized appendages near their mouths called palps. During mating, males transfer sperm using these palps. The unique length of the palps might serve a crucial purpose—keeping distance between the male and female, especially since females can sometimes eat their mates.
How They Were Discovered
The study began with observations on iNaturalist and posts about tarantulas on social media, where people highlighted the unusually large palps. Dr. Zamani collected preserved specimens along with photos and videos, confirming these were indeed new species. He explains, “They are so distinct from their closest relatives that we had to create an entirely new genus named Satyrex.” The name combines “Satyr,” referencing their mythological inspiration, and “rex,” Latin for “king.”
The largest of the new species is called ferox, or “fierce,” due to its defensive behavior. If threatened, it can raise its front legs and produce a loud hissing sound by rubbing its specialized leg hairs.
Location of the New Species
These species were found in the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. Interestingly, a previously known species was also reassigned to the Satyrex genus because of its distinctive long palps.
