On January 6, the DeKalb County School District proudly welcomed four new Board of Education members. They were sworn in by Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams and State Court Judge Mike Jacobs at the Robert R. Freeman Administrative Complex.
These members are Mr. Andrew B. Ziffer (District 1), Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce (District 3), Dr. Tiffany Tate-Hogan (District 5), and Mr. Awet Eyasu (District 7). Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton expressed confidence in their leadership, saying, “Their diverse experiences will help strengthen educational opportunities for all students in DeKalb County.”
Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce starts her second term after two years as vice-chairperson. A lifelong DeKalb resident, she has actively engaged in the community through various organizations, including the Georgia PTA and as President of the DeKalb County Council of PTAs.
“I’m honored to continue our work,” Mrs. Pierce said. “It’s been great, but it’s going to get even better.”
Mr. Andrew B. Ziffer has been involved with DCSD for over 13 years. With more than 30 years in business and real estate, he aims to make DeKalb County Schools the top choice for families.
“Public education is the foundation for opportunity,” he stated. “I want to ensure our schools are where dreams are nurtured and futures built.”
Dr. Tiffany Tate-Hogan is also deeply rooted in DeKalb. She has 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator and is passionate about educational equity.
“Every decision I make is for the children,” Dr. Hogan emphasized. “I’m here to support both students and those who support them.”
Mr. Awet Eyasu, a father of four and former Vice Mayor of Clarkston, plans to advocate for families who may not have access to the same resources his family received. Originally from Eritrea, he has lived in DeKalb County for over 20 years.
“I believe many families deserve better opportunities,” Mr. Eyasu said. “Together, we can make a difference.”
These new board members bring fresh perspectives and a strong commitment to student success. Along with Superintendent Dr. Horton, they promise to create a future filled with excellence and opportunity for all children in DeKalb County.
