Out of thousands of applicants, here are the Montgomery County students who made the cut:

  • Bryan Yung from Poolesville High School focuses on brain activity in diagnosing frontotemporal dementia.
  • Naima Aubry-Romero from Richard Montgomery High School analyzes COVID-19 patterns using advanced neural networks.
  • Iden Han, also from Richard Montgomery, studies how specific pressure responses work in kidney cells.
  • Yunyi Ling from Montgomery Blair High School investigates how Salmonella develops resistance to streptomycin.
  • Jason Youm, another Montgomery Blair student, explores complex mathematical properties of light particles.

Each of these scholars has earned a $2,000 award, with their schools receiving an additional $10,000 in matching funds. They were chosen based on their innovative research, leadership, academic success, creativity, and involvement in their communities. The selected scholars represent schools from 33 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and even locations like China and Switzerland.

These students are getting ready for the next phase of the competition. On January 23, 40 finalists will be picked from the initial 300. These finalists will vie for more than $1.8 million in prizes during an exciting week in Washington, D.C., from March 6-12, with the grand prize being $250,000.

MCPS celebrates this achievement, stating, “Congratulations to these students for their exceptional talent and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge.”
