Celebrating a Century of Service: Vivian Kelby’s Inspiring Journey
CROWN POINT, Ind. – Vivian Kelby recently celebrated her 100th birthday, marking over 38,000 hours of volunteering at Franciscan Health Crown Point. That’s more than four years of dedicated service!
Every Friday, you can find Vivian in the hospital gift shop, still engaged and enjoying her time. "I like to work and I like the people," she shares. Her journey began in January 1976 after a nudge from her father-in-law, who suggested she find a way to be more active than just sewing at home.
Over nearly five decades, Vivian has contributed in many ways. Initially, she made festive stockings for newborns born near Christmas. Later, her roles evolved to include working at the information desk and helping in various departments. She even managed volunteers who served meals to patients.
Vivian is not just a volunteer; she’s also a devoted family matriarch. She is the proud mother of four, grandmother of 14, and great-grandmother to 40, with two more great-grandchildren on the way. She maintains her independence, living near her daughters in Porter County.
The power of volunteering is backed by research. A study by the Corporation for National and Community Service found that those who volunteer regularly experience lower rates of depression and improved overall happiness. Vivian embodies this; she finds joy in her work and camaraderie with fellow volunteers, many of whom she considers friends.
Justin Dougherty, the Manager of Volunteer Services at Franciscan Health, calls Vivian an inspiration. “Her sharp mind, quick wit, and dedication remind us of the importance of purpose,” he says.
Vivian encourages anyone thinking about volunteering to dive in. "You’ll make friends and have a lot of fun," she smiles.
As her story continues to inspire others, it serves as a reminder of the impact one person can have on their community, proving that age is just a number when it comes to service and companionship.
