A recent high-profile policy meeting has shed light on the key figures driving China’s science and technology initiatives. The country aims for better coordination and leadership in these crucial sectors.
The meeting featured a diverse group of attendees, including officials from the finance and education ministries, heads of academic institutions, regional government leaders, and military personnel. This gathering was showcased in footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV.
Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang, who also leads the Central Science and Technology Commission, addressed the conference. This was significant as it was the first of its kind since the commission was established less than two years ago.
Ding’s involvement elevated the profile of the event. Previous meetings were typically chaired by the science minister, with the last one taking place in December 2022. As a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, Ding’s presence underscored the importance of the meeting.
This conference marked Ding’s debut in his new role as commission head. He was officially appointed just in June, during an address to prominent scientists in Beijing.
