Meet the New Face of CMU: Energizing Live Mascot Chosen by Students!

Meet Redbull, the new live mascot at Colorado Mesa University. He’s a longhorn Angus cross and a real foodie. Redbull’s personality shines, and he’s already captured the hearts of students and alumni.

Before Redbull, the school’s mascot was called Rowdy I. He retired after the last football game in November, leaving big shoes to fill. Rowdy I was a bit slower due to his age, which made the wranglers think a younger mascot would be a better fit.

Redbull was chosen after a vote among students. The wranglers had spent months training several candidates, but it was Redbull who stood out. “He just walked like a dog,” said Sydney Fonte, who spearheaded his training. Redbull was calm and easy to work with from day one, making the training process enjoyable.

At less than a year old and weighing around 300 pounds, Redbull is expected to grow significantly. His horns will also lengthen, adding to his majestic look. By the time the football season starts, he could be double his current size.

Interestingly, the transition from Rowdy I to Redbull marks a shift in strategies. Rowdy I required all six wranglers to keep him in line; Redbull, however, matches their pace, potentially simplifying the handling during games. This means fewer wranglers may be needed, allowing the others to focus on cheering and setting up fun displays.

While training Redbull, the wranglers faced challenges with other candidates that were less cooperative. They had to go back to square one with some after breaks. They took a risk with Redbull’s training method and it paid off. His energetic personality is already a hit on social media, creating buzz among students.

As Redbull grows and earns his place as a school icon, the wranglers plan to adapt the mascot’s game-day route. “It should look better than just running straight,” said Colby Malpass, president of the Rowdy Wranglers. This change promises to add excitement to the events.

The wranglers are committed to continuing Redbull’s training, even over summer break. Sydney has taken on the responsibility of caring for him at her family’s ranch. With support from her siblings, Redbull will get the ongoing companionship and training he needs to thrive.

As for the future, it looks bright for this feisty little steer. “He’s going to be a handful, but that should be fun,” said Malpass. Redbull is not just a new mascot; he’s a new beginning for the Rowdy Wranglers and CMU.
