Meet the New Physicians Joining McLeod Health: Your Trusted Partners in Care

McLeod Health is excited to introduce two new members of its medical team: Dr. Shayne Caswell and Dr. Nicole Vasquez Plaza.

Dr. Caswell is now part of the Pee Dee Surgical Group at McLeod Regional Medical Center. He completed his medical education at Campbell University in 2018. After that, he underwent a General Surgery Preliminary Internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and finished his General Surgery Residency in 2024 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Most recently, he completed a Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Caswell is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons and the American Osteopathic Association. He is currently accepting new patients for same-day and next-day appointments. For inquiries, you can reach the office at 843-665-7941.

Dr. Vasquez Plaza joins the Medical Plaza Family Medicine team at McLeod. With her board certification in Family Medicine, she will be working alongside other seasoned professionals to provide primary care to patients of all ages. Originally from Puerto Rico, she earned her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and completed her residency training at McLeod Health. Fluent in both Spanish and English, she has a keen interest in women’s health and pediatrics. Dr. Vasquez Plaza is also accepting new patients and invites her existing patients to continue their care with her at this new location. To book an appointment, call 843-679-7272.

In healthcare, the integration of new doctors is vital for improving patient care and addressing community needs. For example, recent studies show that areas with more primary care physicians have better health outcomes. This enhances the quality of care and ensures that patients have access to timely medical attention.

The addition of Dr. Caswell and Dr. Vasquez Plaza comes at a time when many healthcare facilities are seeing staff shortages. The American Medical Association reported that nearly 50% of doctors feel overworked due to increased demand for services. By bringing in new talent, McLeod Health aims to combat this trend and ensure comprehensive care for its patients.

As community health continues to evolve, welcoming skilled professionals like Dr. Caswell and Dr. Vasquez Plaza demonstrates McLeod Health’s commitment to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare.
