Carolina Athletics is set to honor two remarkable figures, Martina Ballen and Hubert West, with the 2026 Tar Heel Trailblazer awards. This celebration, taking place during Black History Month, highlights individuals who have significantly impacted the student-athlete experience at UNC and beyond.
Martina Ballen made history as the first African American administrator in UNC Athletics when she joined in 1987. She recently retired as the chief financial officer after a successful career supporting 44 Tar Heel national championships. Under her leadership, the athletics department’s budget skyrocketed from $16 million to over $180 million.
Reflecting on her recognition, Ballen said, “I’m honored to be part of the Trailblazers. It’s a privilege to join such a distinguished group.” Her dedication did not go unnoticed, earning her multiple awards, including the C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award in 2018.
Hubert West also made waves as one of the first African American track and field athletes at Carolina. Competing from 1970 to 1973, he later served as an assistant coach and became the first African American head coach for Carolina Athletics from 1981 to 1983. West expressed gratitude for this honor, crediting those who paved the way for him. “This award is a tribute to everyone who helped me on my journey,” he said.
Both Ballen and West are part of a prestigious lineage of Trailblazers. So far, 18 individuals have received this recognition, celebrating those who have made a lasting difference in UNC’s athletic community.
In recent years, more educational institutions are spotlighting long-overdue contributions from underrepresented groups in sports and academia. For example, a survey by the NCAA found that 73% of student-athletes believe diversity and inclusion efforts are essential for college sports. Recognizing pioneers like Ballen and West not only honors their legacy but inspires future generations of student-athletes to strive for greatness and equality.
These awards will be presented during the men’s basketball game against Virginia Tech on February 28, followed by a private reception. It’s a meaningful occasion to reflect on the progress made and the journey ahead for student-athletes at UNC and across the nation.
