Celebrating Girls in Sports
On February 10, 2025, Duke University opened the doors of Cameron Indoor Stadium for a special event to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It was a morning filled with fun and learning for young girls in the community.
Hundreds of girls, from grades 1 to 8, gathered at the iconic arena to experience various sports. Over a dozen Duke athletes volunteered to share their skills and passion, igniting the girls’ love for sports.
This event was not just about teaching sports; it was about building confidence. The Duke athletes connected with the girls, sharing stories of how sports have shaped their lives.
As the morning went on, laughter filled the hall. Every activity brought smiles and excitement. Girls practiced basketball shots, scored goals, and even tried their hand at tennis. The joy was contagious!
Throughout the stadium, different sports stations were set up. Young girls learned to handle tennis rackets and grasp the basics of rowing, while cheerleaders brought energy and encouragement. There was also a putting green set up by the golf team, challenging the girls to improve their swings.
Each station offered something unique. Some girls had the chance to practice their basketball techniques, while others enjoyed playing volleyball and learning new skills. The atmosphere was alive with fun and friendship as they collected autographs from their favorite athletes.
In the mezzanine, girls received valuable tips from Duke’s tennis and track teams. Not only did they learn about sports, but they also formed lasting memories with the athletes who guided them.
By the end of the day, the excitement was palpable. The girls walked away with new skills, new friends, and the inspiration to pursue their love of sports. Events like these show how powerful sports can be in building community and confidence.
Photos captured the joyful moments, reminding everyone involved of the fun and sportsmanship that filled the day. It’s moments like these that highlight the importance of encouraging young girls to engage in sports and develop their talents.
