University Studies professor Phil Frana was honored as a “Game Changer” during JMU’s first football game of the 2025 season against Weber State. This accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions to both JMU and its athletics program.
Frana’s nomination came from Fletcher Linder, the dean of University Studies. Linder highlighted Frana’s dedication to guiding student-athletes in balancing their athletic and academic lives. He helps them create flexible study plans that align with their sports commitments and career goals. This support is crucial, especially since many student-athletes face intense pressure to perform both on the field and in the classroom.
According to a 2023 NCAA report, about 90% of student-athletes believe academic performance is as important as their athletic performance. This underscores the vital role educators like Frana play in shaping their futures beyond sports.
JMU will celebrate “Game Changer” honorees at home football games throughout the season, recognizing talent and dedication from each college. Some upcoming dates include:
- Sept. 27 vs. Georgia Southern: College of Integrated Science and Engineering
- Oct. 11 vs. Louisiana: College of Science and Mathematics
- Oct. 18 vs. ODU: College of Arts and Letters and College of Visual and Performing Arts
- Nov. 15 vs. App State: College of Health and Behavioral Studies
- Nov. 22 vs. Washington State: College of Business and College of Education
This initiative not only honors outstanding efforts but also fosters a sense of community at JMU. It encourages others to acknowledge the hard work happening behind the scenes, reinforcing the importance of balancing education and athletics.
As social media buzzes with excitement about these honorees, it’s clear that JMU is committed to celebrating achievements across all areas. For more information about athletics and events, check out JMU Athletics.
