Sterling Lockett’s journey with Kansas State football is deeply rooted in family tradition and resilience. He grew up watching his dad, Kevin, uncle Aaron, and brother Tyler leave their mark on the program. From 1993 to 2014, the Locketts contributed to an impressive 187 wins and earned All-American honors.
Sterling, now a senior wide receiver, recalls a memorable moment from his childhood. He met Collin Klein, a towering quarterback who led the Wildcats to many victories. “I was really young,” Sterling shares. “All I remember thinking was, ‘This dude is huge.'” Today, he looks up to Klein in a different light—as his head coach.

The upcoming season is exciting for Sterling, especially with Klein’s offensive strategies. Klein had previously led successful offenses at Texas A&M and in his time at Kansas State. “We’re going to be really fast and explosive,” Lockett says. Klein understands how to maximize players’ strengths. “He puts people in positions to win their one-on-ones,” he adds, showcasing Klein’s ability to adapt plays to players’ skills.
Last season was a learning curve for Sterling, who made his first career reception against UCF after a challenging start. He aims to leave a significant impact on K-State football. “K-State means a lot to me and my family,” he says.
The team’s new wide receiver corps is another source of excitement. Joining Sterling are players like Izaiah Williams and Josh Manning, creating a strong bond among them. “It’s been great,” he states. “We’re super tight-knit.”
Special teams, an area that often determines game outcomes, will see improvements under new coordinator Stanton Weber. Lockett appreciates Weber’s hands-on approach and anticipates better kickoff and punt returns this season. “I’m looking forward to setting up great returns,” he expresses.
The atmosphere around Kansas State football is one of unity and determination. With Klein at the helm, there’s a renewed sense of hope. “He understands what it means to be part of K-State,” Sterling reflects. As the Wildcats gear up for the season, they aim to be the team that no one wants to face—a team that plays with relentless effort and expects to win.
In a recent survey by ESPN, nearly 60% of fans believe K-State has the potential to surprise everyone this season, echoing Sterling’s sentiments about the team’s underdog spirit.
