Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and a former tech director at Epic, is on a mission to create a new game engine called “The Immensive Engine.” His goal? To offer a European alternative to popular engines like Unreal and Unity.
In a recent chat with De Technoloog, Brussee emphasized that this engine will be fully hosted in Europe, developed by Europeans, and aligned with European regulations. “No one has made an engine that checks all these boxes,” he pointed out.
Brussee stressed the need for realistic 3D worlds, not just for gaming, but for various applications. He believes that integrating AI from the start is crucial. Unlike engines designed for traditional methods, where changes require extensive updates, Brussee sees AI as a game changer.
“With AI, we can rethink how we develop software,” he explained. “A solid AI framework can replace the work of ten or fifteen people.” This innovative approach could redefine game development and the ways studios create immersive experiences.
The idea of using AI in gaming has been a hot topic lately. While players have mixed feelings about AI, many big-name companies like Krafton, Square Enix, and EA are investing heavily in it. According to a recent Statista report, the global AI in gaming market is projected to grow significantly, highlighting the increasing demand for smarter technology in game development.
The trend of developing localized technology isn’t unique to gaming. Similar movements are seen in other tech sectors, emphasizing the importance of complying with regional regulations. As Brussee works towards launching The Immensive Engine, it’s clear that the landscape of game development could be transformed, offering fresh opportunities for European studios and developers.
