Meet Vikram K. Doraiswami: India’s New Ambassador to China and His Vision for Stronger Ties

Vikram K. Doraiswami has just been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to China. Set to begin his new role soon, he brings a wealth of experience from over 30 years in the Indian Foreign Service.

Doraiswami’s career started after he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992. Before entering government, he spent a year as a journalist. He earned a master’s degree in History from the University of Delhi and quickly dove into international relations. His first posting was in Hong Kong in 1994.

Speaking Chinese has been a priority for him. He studied it at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school, which helped him during his time in Beijing.

His journey includes a mix of significant roles. After working in Beijing, he returned to India, where he served as Deputy Chief of Protocol and later worked at the Prime Minister’s Office. He also held positions at the United Nations in New York and in South Africa as India’s Consul General.

In 2011, he was involved with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and coordinated the Fourth BRICS Summit in India. His expertise in international relations continued to grow as he took charge of multiple divisions within the Ministry of External Affairs.

Last year, Doraiswami was the High Commissioner to the UK, a role that came after serving in Bangladesh. His new assignment in China is crucial as India navigates its complex relationship with China amid global changes.

Interestingly, as Doraiswami steps into this role, public interest in India-China relations is rising. Social media platforms have seen a spike in discussions about diplomatic ties, showcasing both optimism and concern about future collaborations and tensions.

Doraiswami also enjoys reading, sports, and jazz music. He is known as a fan of writer P.G. Wodehouse and speaks multiple languages, including Chinese and French. His wife, Sangeeta, works in education, and they have a son who is 23 years old.

With his diverse background and interests, Doraiswami is set to make a memorable impact in his new position.
