Western New England University has chosen Joseph C. Hartman as its new president, taking office on June 1. Hartman is currently the provost and vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he has managed academic affairs since 2019.
Before becoming provost, Hartman was the dean of the college of engineering at UMass Lowell. He holds a doctorate and has a background in engineering. Hartman is stepping into this role after interim President Michael Alexander, who held the position since July, following Robert E. Johnson’s retirement in August.

Western New England University has about 3,700 students, with over 2,500 full-time undergraduates. The campus spans 215 acres in Springfield.
