Meet Your College Food Ambassadors: Innovators Serving Delicious Ideas and Healthy Choices!

Ever notice those QR codes in the Rice dining halls? They’re asking for your feedback, but many students overlook them. That’s where the Food Ambassador program comes in. Instead of a code, you might remember a friendly face.

Kyle Hardwick, the senior executive chef, and Beth Leaver, the executive director of housing and dining, started this program to connect better with students.

In an email, Hardwick explained that during a health sciences class he spoke at, students suggested a food representatives program. This sparked his idea to create a team that would work closely with Housing & Dining to understand student food preferences.

The ambassadors meet every two weeks with Faith Richards, the assistant director of communications and marketing for Housing and Dining (H&D), and Clare Rezentes, the dietitian. They discuss feedback, concerns, and new ideas for what’s served at Rice.

Richards is passionate about this initiative. As someone with celiac disease, she gets the struggle of finding food that meets personal dietary needs. “This role lets me help others who face similar challenges,” she shared.

The ambassadors are dedicated, too. When Winter Storm Enzo hit, many stepped up to help out in the dining areas. There are two ambassadors from each college, plus representatives from graduate and off-campus students. Some also speak for specific groups like student-athletes.

Olivia Seo, a Brown College ambassador, believes the program is just getting started. Currently, they’re focused on reviewing a new pilot dining schedule. “Our goals will keep changing to meet students’ needs. We want to make sure everyone has the best dining experience possible,” she said.
