Meghan Markle has launched her new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” but it’s facing criticism. Some commentators, like Emma Woolf, have called it “silly” and “fake lifestyle stuff.”
The show features eight episodes, each lasting about 33 minutes. Markle invites celebrity friends to a beautiful California estate where they share cooking, gardening, and hosting tips.
Woolf expressed her disappointment, stating, “If you’re a cook, this is just silly fakery. Arranging fruit and calling it a rainbow platter? Everyone else just calls it a fruit salad.” She also critiqued elements like sprinkling lavender on guest towels, suggesting there’s little substance behind the show’s charm.
Woolf emphasized a sense of smugness and fakeness that seems to irritate viewers. She mentioned that even the kitchen portrayed is not Markle’s own, and referred to herself in the third person, which she found off-putting. “This leaves a bad taste,” she said, questioning the authenticity expected from a cooking and lifestyle show.
Despite the criticism, the show is a significant project for the Sussexes, who signed a notable deal with Netflix back in 2020. Ahead of the premiere, Prince Harry and their children, Archie and Lilibet, sent Markle flowers with a heartfelt message: “Congratulations mumma! We love your show and we love you!”
Markle decorated the show’s launch with surprise visits to fans at a special screening, where some fans even showed off temporary tattoos featuring her brand’s logo, “As Ever.” In an interview with People magazine, she mentioned the “learning curve” she experienced while making the series.
Interestingly, Markle also recently renamed her lifestyle brand from American Riviera Orchard to As Ever. This change came shortly before the show’s launch, likely due to trademark challenges. The name “As Ever” connects to her previous lifestyle blog, The Tig, which ran from 2014 until 2017.
Markle’s journey with this project is filled with ups and downs, and it will be interesting to see how the public continues to respond to her lifestyle series.
