Mel Gibson’s ‘Flight Risk’ Soars to Box Office No. 1 as ‘The Brutalist’ Expands – What Moviegoers Need to Know!

In New York, Mel Gibson’s latest film, “Flight Risk,” hit the top of the box office, earning $12 million. Despite this success, critics weren’t impressed, giving it a mere 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences didn’t rate it much higher with a “C” CinemaScore.

This weekend was quiet, especially for January. The Lionsgate thriller features Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal, played by Michelle Dockery, along with a fugitive portrayed by Topher Grace across Alaska. Though it opened at number one, it wasn’t the box office triumph Gibson may have hoped for following his acclaimed film “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016.

Alongside “Flight Risk,” the critically acclaimed film “The Brutalist” made its way into wide release, bringing in $2.9 million. This three-and-a-half-hour epic, nominated for ten Academy Awards, had been shown with an intermission and has done well in limited release, gathering $6 million previously.

Another contender for the best picture, “Nickel Boys,” earned only $340,171 despite expanding into more theaters. This film takes a unique approach by being almost entirely shot in first-person perspective.

The weekend also saw the debut of “Presence,” a horror film from Steven Soderbergh, which opened to $3.4 million. It was made for just $2 million, highlighting the difference between budget and earnings in the current box office environment.

In terms of holdovers, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” remained popular, pulling in $8.7 million in its sixth week, while “One of Them Days,” featuring Keke Palmer and SZA, continued to perform well, earning $8 million and dropping only 32% from its opening weekend. This success stands out, as many comedies struggle to perform in theaters lately.
