The Tigers earned a solid 11-8 victory against Central Arkansas recently, bringing their record to 22-30 overall and 8-16 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). They face Wichita State, which shares the same conference record at 17-34.
This series marks the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd meetings between the teams. Historically, the Shockers lead the rivalry 13-7. Last season, Memphis claimed a thrilling 11-10 win in the series finale.
Wichita State just faced Rice, losing the series but bounced back with a win over Oral Roberts. Meanwhile, the Tigers will rotate pitchers including Seth Garner (3-7, 4.11 ERA) and David Case (1-7, 5.47 ERA). The final starter for Saturday’s game is yet to be announced.
Memphis catcher Jonah Sutton has been impressive, throwing out 20 out of 41 attempted steals, ranking him 14th nationally for his position. As a team, the Tigers have successfully thrown out 40% of stolen base attempts, showcasing their defensive strength.
The Tigers are also strong at turning double plays. Last year, they ranked 12th nationally with 54 double plays and have already turned 47 this season, leading AAC and ranking seventh in the nation.
On the other side of the field, Wichita State relies on players like Camden Johnson (.324 batting average, 15 doubles, 31 RBIs) and Josh Livingston (.288, 14 home runs, 45 RBIs). The Shockers also rank 28th nationally with 99 hit-by-pitches.
As the teams head into this critical weekend, every game counts for both in their quest for a spot in the conference tournament.
