Boston University Men’s Rowing Shines at IRA National Championship
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Boston University men’s rowing team had an exciting second day at the IRA National Championship Regatta on May 30. The team celebrated two first-place finishes and reached the Petite Finals in two categories.
The highlight of the day was the impressive performance of BU’s Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 boats. Both made it to the Petite Final after tough semifinals. The Second Varsity 8 also shone, winning its race in the CD semifinal.
The calm water and sunny skies set a perfect backdrop as the teams took to the water. Temperatures heated up as the day progressed.
In the AB semifinal, BU’s Varsity 8, with coxswain Emily Slawin and stroke Alessandro Gardino, sped off the start line, gaining early momentum. They faced a competitive field, finishing sixth with a time of 5:50.13, ensuring their place in the Petite Final.
Next was the Third Varsity 8, coxed by Ben Brinckerhoff and stroked by Liam Feeney. After a slow start against Stanford, they rallied mid-race, finishing strong at 5:56.36 to secure another spot in the Petite Final.
The Second Varsity 8 showcased their power, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Griffith Coupland. They dominated the CD semifinal, winning with a time of 5:56.71, the fastest in their semifinal. They showcased strategic racing skills, maintaining their lead throughout.
The day ended with an exciting photo finish in the Varsity 4 B final. Coxswain Hannah Noguchi and stroke Mason Laundry led their team to victory in 6:35.48, narrowly beating Syracuse by just 0.44 seconds, placing the Terriers seventh nationally in this category.
Looking Ahead
The IRA National Championship wraps up on May 31, with the Second Varsity 8 set to race in the C final at 9:22 a.m. PT, while the Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 compete in their respective Petite Finals.
Rowing is evolving alongside advancements in technique and training.
