Meridian Food Bank’s Expansion: Meeting the Rising Needs of West Ada Students

MERIDIAN, Idaho — The Meridian Food Bank just hit an important milestone by completing an expansion that doubles its workspace. This is a big step in addressing the growing need among students in the West Ada School District.

This week, community members and leaders celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The expansion began in August, aimed primarily at improving the food bank’s backpack program, which sends weekend food bags to students in need.

“We want to ensure we can keep serving students. If we hadn’t expanded, we might have had to limit assistance,” said Kent Christensen, the food bank’s executive director.

In 2023, the backpack program provided support for about 800 students each week. It offers essential food items for weekends when school meals aren’t available. Volunteers pack bags containing breakfast, lunch, fruit, and shelf-stable milk, all designed to help kids through the weekend.

Volunteer Elaine Carlson has been part of this effort for the past four years. “The demand for food assistance has definitely grown,” she said. Despite the challenges, she finds joy in helping kids and giving back to the community. “It’s rewarding to know we’re making a difference,” she added.

Recent surveys show food banks across the nation have seen a rise in demand as families face economic uncertainties. This aligns with the growing reliance on local food programs. Statistics from the USDA indicate that around 1 in 8 Americans faced food insecurity in 2023.

Along with the expanded workspace, the new project means more storage for food donations. Meridian Mayor Robert Simison acknowledged the tough reality of increasing food needs but praised the food bank’s dedication to support local families in need.

To help, local residents can donate food items specifically for the weekend snack bags. Engaging the community helps ensure no child goes hungry.
