Mersin is taking big strides in fighting climate change. Thanks to the 2024 Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) evaluation, Mersin now holds a prestigious ‘A-‘ rating. This improvement marks a significant jump from a previous ‘D’ score, showing how committed the city is to environmental issues. The push for sustainable practices involved creating clear plans for cutting carbon emissions and protecting the area from climate risks.

In a recent assessment involving 1,000 cities around the world, Mersin stood out for its innovative and environmentally friendly projects. Through the motto “The Future Starts Today,” the city has introduced solar power plants, smart public transport systems, and effective waste management practices. These initiatives not only boost green spaces but also enhance urban resilience against climate change.

Dr. Zafer Kuşatan, the director of Climate Change and Renewable Energy within Mersin’s municipality, shared insights about this achievement. He emphasized that only 13% of evaluated cities made it to the ‘A’ list—indicating that Mersin is among the leaders globally in environmental transparency. This rating reflects the serious efforts the city is making to meet international standards and implement effective climate policies.

One area where Mersin is making a significant impact is in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Kuşatan explained that the city is moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. For instance, Mersin is recycling waste to produce electrical energy. They are also updating public transport by adding electric buses. Furthermore, they support local female farmers by installing solar panels to help them operate more sustainably.

The CDP itself is a not-for-profit organization established in 2000. It encourages cities and businesses worldwide to report their environmental impacts, focusing especially on climate change and water security. By pushing for transparency, the CDP helps stakeholders make informed decisions on eco-friendly practices.
