New Delhi: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing scrutiny from Indian Parliament. A committee is set to summon the company over remarks made by its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, regarding the 2024 Indian general election. Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP, expressed concerns about Zuckerberg spreading misinformation about India’s democracy.
Dubey stated that misinformation can harm the image of a democratic nation. He believes Meta should apologize to both Parliament and the public for this error.
In a podcast on January 10, Zuckerberg highlighted a global decline in trust towards governments following the Covid pandemic. He incorrectly suggested that most incumbent governments, including India’s, lost power in elections held in 2024. “2024 was a very big election year around the world, and incumbents basically lost every single one,” he claimed.
Shortly after these comments, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responded. He pointed out that in India, the people had shown strong support for the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vaishnaw noted that over 640 million voters participated in the recent elections, reaffirming their confidence in Modi and his leadership.
He emphasized that Modi’s government had provided significant support during the pandemic, including free food for millions and vaccinations. Vaishnaw expressed disappointment over Zuckerberg’s misinformation, urging the need for factual accuracy and credibility.
