Thinking Machines Lab, a startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has lost another key member to Meta. Joshua Gross, a seasoned software engineer, played a crucial role in developing the lab’s main product, Tinker. He recently joined Meta’s Superintelligence Labs as their new engineering team leader.
Thinking Machines Lab has emerged as a hotspot for AI talent, especially after securing a massive $2 billion funding round last year, which valued the company at $12 billion. This growth comes in a time when major tech firms are aggressively recruiting AI experts amidst fierce competition in Silicon Valley.
Meta has now recruited five founding members of Thinking Machines Lab, including co-founder Andrew Tulloch. Notably, OpenAI has also pulled talent from the startup, hiring its former CTO Barret Zoph and cybersecurity specialist Jolene Parish.
Despite these losses, Thinking Machines Lab has celebrated some victories, too. The lab appointed Soumith Chintala, the creator of the open-source AI project PyTorch, as its new CTO and brought onboard Neal Wu, a standout coder with multiple gold medals from programming Olympiads.
Since launching a year ago, the startup has expanded significantly, growing its team from a handful to around 130 employees. The battle for AI talent is expected to intensify as tech giants vie for skilled workers, highlighting the rapid growth and potential of the AI sector.
