“Mets Make Strategic Move: Travis Jankowski Joins the Roster as Luisangel Acuña is Optioned”

The Mets made some notable roster changes today, including signing left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady. Interestingly, he’s requested to be called “Dicky Lovelady,” a decision reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Along with Lovelady, the Mets have added outfielder Travis Jankowski to the roster. To accommodate these moves, they optioned right-hander Tyler Zuber and infielder Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Syracuse.

This marks a trend for the Mets; just yesterday, they sent catcher Francisco Alvarez to Syracuse as well. Acuña started strong this season, hitting .288 with a solid on-base percentage until the end of April. However, his performance dropped significantly, leaving him with a disappointing average of .194 since May. This decline has led to fewer starts—just five in the past month. With shortstop Francisco Lindor healthy and Ronny Mauricio now available, the team opted to give Acuña a chance to regain his rhythm in the minors.

In contrast, Jankowski, a seasoned player signed to a minor league deal a few weeks back, brings a unique skill set. While his offensive stats are modest—.236 batting average and a 76 wRC+ over his career—he’s known for his speed and defensive skills. If he gets consistent playing time, he could provide valuable contributions as a pinch runner or defensive replacement.

As for Jose Siri, he’s been sidelined for over 60 days due to a left tibia fracture. Initially expected to take eight to ten weeks for recovery, he hasn’t healed as quickly as planned. Fortunately, his 60-day injured list designation is retroactive, meaning he could return to the lineup soon.

These roster moves reflect the Mets’ effort to adapt their strategy, especially as they navigate through injuries and seek to optimize their lineup.
