On January 28, Gov. Matt Meyer announced a new executive order to create an advisory group focused on farm and food policy in Delaware. This group, called the Delaware Council on Farm and Food Policy, will consist of at least 11 members, including four representatives from the food retail and distribution sector.
The council’s main job is to oversee the Delaware Food Resource Connection, which started in 2021. This initiative aims to gather data on food resources and improve access to locally grown food for consumers.
Additionally, the council will organize an annual Farm and Food Planning and Networking Seminar. This event is designed to enhance collaboration among those working to feed communities across Delaware.
The executive order also emphasizes the importance of coordinating efforts to secure federal grants that support food access. The council will need to ensure these proposals are submitted for approval through the Delaware State Clearinghouse before moving forward.
Recently, Governor Meyer expressed his concerns about federal funding cuts initiated by President Trump. He stated that such cuts could threaten the livelihoods of many residents, making it harder to access essential services like food, health care, and childcare. Meyer welcomed the temporary pause on these funding freezes initiated by U.S. District Judge AliKhan, but he urged continued vigilance on this issue.
