Omaha, Nebraska, USA

The Heartwood Greenway System in Omaha is an innovative project that blends flood control, ecological restoration, and community recreation. Designed by Meyer Studio Land Architects, it was created after the serious floods of 2019.
This project features 11 unique water detention basins. These not only help manage stormwater but also beautify the area. With over 14 miles of accessible trails and native prairie restoration, Heartwood serves as both a protective environment and a lively public area.
Covering more than 500 acres, Heartwood is more than just a park. It includes the corporate headquarters for Applied Underwriters, residential neighborhoods, shops, and open spaces for events. Developers faced significant challenges, especially after the devastating floods that impacted the region.
In recognition of its forward-thinking design, Heartwood received the 2024 American Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum. The team aimed to do more than just handle stormwater; they wanted to create a deeper connection between people and nature.
The design features a series of water management vessels that capture stormwater runoff while offering various experiences, whether they are full, dry, or frozen. This not only helps reduce flooding but also revitalizes the local ecosystem by replenishing aquifers, restoring native woodlands, and reintroducing prairie grasses.
Heartwood’s design makes it easy for people to connect with nature. Its trails integrate with Omaha’s “Paths of Discovery,” creating a seamless network for biking and walking. This accessibility allows residents to engage with wildlife and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
To honor Omaha’s agricultural history, the area includes orchards and community gardens, as well as amenities like playgrounds and picnic spots. Visitors can enjoy sledding hills, council rings, and bonfire clearings, making Heartwood a rich community resource.
Heartwood is not just a space; it’s a foundation for a vibrant community. It promotes civic pride and well-being while providing a place for everyone to enjoy nature for years to come.
