Miami University Synchronized Skating Teams Shine at Nationals
The Miami University synchronized skating teams recently wrapped up their season at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. The collegiate team celebrated their fifth consecutive national title and their 24th overall championship. Meanwhile, the senior team secured a bronze medal with a solid performance.
The collegiate team’s free skate performance of ‘Thriller’ was a standout, scoring an impressive 122.81, the highest in the competition. Their executed element score was 60.15, and the total program score reached 62.66. This exceptional performance earned them the gold medal, outpacing the University of Michigan, which scored 107.42, and Western Michigan University, which came in third at 105.46.
The senior team also delivered a strong showing with their ‘Le Freak’-themed routine, posting a score of 133.55. When combined with their short skate, they finished with a total score of 203.93.
These performances highlight a growing trend in synchronized skating, reflecting the sport’s increasing popularity. Participation in synchronized skating has surged over the past few years; according to a recent survey by U.S. Figure Skating, enrollment in synchronized teams has grown by nearly 20% since 2018. Experts in sports marketing suggest that this growth is partly due to more visibility in media and increased social media engagement, where many teams share their unique routines and behind-the-scenes moments, drawing in younger audiences.
As the Miami synchronized skating teams conclude this season, they set a high standard for future competitions, showcasing hard work and talent. For a deeper look at synchronized skating’s evolution, check out the recent report by U.S. Figure Skating here.
