For the week of October 6, Sloane Wearren and Matteo Giampa have earned the title of Miami’s Athletes of the Week, brought to you by Skyline Chili.
Sloane Wearren put on an impressive show in her two games. She fired six shots, all on target, scoring two goals. One was against #17 Appalachian State, while the other came from a penalty stroke against #8 Wake Forest, which tied the game and pushed the RedHawks into overtime. Thanks to her efforts, Miami clinched a decisive 7-0 victory over App State, marking their first win against a ranked team this season. A junior from Louisville, Ky., Sloane is pursuing a Marketing degree at the Farmer School of Business.
Matteo Giampa also had a standout performance in his Miami debut. He scored twice, including the game-winning goal during a power play with just under four minutes left. This marked his first multi-goal game since October 31, 2024, with Canisius, and he became the first RedHawk to score twice in a game since January 24, 2025. Giampa was named the game’s First Star as Miami staged a comeback to win 6-4. He also assisted on the game-winning goal the following day, which was his 40th career assist, leading Miami to its first home sweep of Ferris State since 2006. Originally from Virgil, Ontario, Matteo is studying Sport Management in the College of Education, Health and Society.
It’s worth noting that both players have not only shown individual skill but their contributions are vital for the team’s overall success this season. As the sports landscape evolves, having athletes like Sloane and Matteo who can perform under pressure is crucial for any team’s hope of making a mark.
