For my kids, the names “Josh Lasseter” and “David Ellison” don’t quite catch their interest, even if they’re behind some popular shows.
When I turned on “Swapped” from Skydance Animation, I expected some resistance. Their previous films, “Luck” and “Spellbound,” didn’t leave a great impression on me or my kids. Netflix is becoming a solid platform for animated films, but I was still skeptical after my experience with those earlier titles.
However, “Swapped” shows signs of improvement. Directed by Nathan Greno, known for “Tangled,” it features Michael B. Jordan as the voice of Ollie, a curious woodland creature. Kids may love his character’s journey, especially with charming dialogue and colorful animation that draws them in.
The story follows Ollie as he runs from a javan, resembling a bright parakeet. He’s been raised to fear the other creatures in the Valley, taught to “hide today to survive tomorrow.” But everything changes when he discovers a magical pod that allows him to talk to the javan.
This transformation kicks off a fun adventure. Ollie and the javan, named Ivy, bicker and bond as they navigate the Valley together. The pair learns about trust and communication. Their journey offers a lesson on overcoming misunderstandings and fears—a message that resonates with both kids and adults.
Despite its charming visuals, the script offers somewhat generic dialogue, leaving my little one wondering why it wasn’t more engaging. Still, voice talent like Tracy Morgan adds flair to the scenes, making them more enjoyable.
The film creatively blends animal life with elements of nature, displaying unique character designs. We see bears with grass on their backs and fish that reflect the surrounding flora. These concepts are simple but effective, appealing to younger viewers.
Yet, while the film captures the imagination, it lacks the humor and musical energy that kids typically love. Some scenes might not hold their attention long enough to appreciate the deeper message about trust and communication.
Overall, “Swapped” is a step forward for Skydance Animation. It’s not perfect, but it offers a colorful escape into a world where characters learn to connect. The film shows promise, hinting that future titles might strive for greater depth.
In a broader context, animation continues to evolve, with more studios pushing creative boundaries. Many films today tackle themes of empathy and understanding, reflecting societal shifts toward communication and collaboration. As kids consume more media, understanding these messages can shape their worldviews.
