Michael Conlan Retires from Boxing After Heartbreaking Loss to Walsh: What This Means for His Legacy

Mick Conlan has decided to retire from boxing, a sport that has shaped his life in many ways. His recent fight at the SSE Arena in Belfast marked a bittersweet return after his earlier defeat to Jordan Gill in December 2023. This latest match didn’t go as he had hoped, leading him to reflect on his career.

After a 16-month break, Conlan came back in March 2025 with new coach Grant Smith. He scored a point victory over Asad Asif Khan in Brighton and followed up by stopping Jack Bateson in Dublin. Yet, despite these wins, his performance in Belfast showed that he couldn’t compete with the top champions anymore. “It was a close fight,” said his opponent, Walsh, who has his sights set on WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington.

Conlan’s decision to step away isn’t filled with bitterness. “Boxing has given me an unbelievable life,” he shared. He acknowledged the ups and downs the sport brings. While he has achieved a lot, he never reached his ultimate goal of becoming a world champion—something he admits is tough to accept.

Moreover, the demands of boxing took a toll on his personal life. Conlan reflected on missing significant moments in his children’s lives due to training camps. “I’ve missed maybe 65 or 70% of their lives through boxing,” he said. His daughter will soon turn 11, and his son is seven, prompting him to prioritize family as he leaves the ring.

Looking at the broader picture, many athletes face similar struggles as they transition from their sporting careers to family life. According to a recent study by the International Journal of Sports Science, nearly 43% of retired athletes experience feelings of loss as they step away from their sport. Such transitions can be challenging, as many may find it hard to adapt to life outside of competition.

In the end, Conlan’s story resonates with anyone who has poured their heart into something, only to face the reality of moving on. His journey reminds us of the balance between chasing dreams and cherishing family.
