MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of Michigan baseball team faced a tough loss, falling 13-1 to Minnesota in their opening game of the series.
From the start, Michigan struggled. They went down 5-0 early. In the third inning, Drew Culbertson managed to hit a solo home run, giving Michigan their only run. They had a chance to rally, but with two walks, the team couldn’t capitalize and bring more runners home.
On the other side, Minnesota took control quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning. They added more in the third and fourth, racking up a total of seven runs in those two innings. Credit goes to Justin Brown and Keegan O’Hearn, who held Minnesota scoreless in the fifth inning, the only time the Gophers were shut down all night.
Michigan had a couple of opportunities to score throughout the game. In the fifth, Dane Morrow led off with a single, and Cooper Mullens followed with a walk. Unfortunately, a double play extinguished that chance. In the sixth, the Wolverines loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat without any runs.
Despite these missed opportunities, Minnesota continued to build their lead, adding another run in the sixth. O’Hearn struck out the last batter that inning, preventing any more damage. The game concluded in the seventh, with Michigan failing to score on what could have been their last chance.
The loss brings Michigan’s record to 30-18 overall, and 15-10 in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, Minnesota improves to 30-18 and moves to 11-14 in the conference.
This match highlights the challenges Michigan faces in a tough Big Ten season. According to recent statistics, teams must capitalize on every scoring chance, especially against strong competitors like Minnesota.
