Michigan State University Moves On: What Jonathan Smith’s Departure Means for Spartans Football

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University has announced that Jonathan Smith will not return as head coach for the 2026 football season. This decision follows a tough 2025 season, where performance didn’t meet expectations.

J Batt, the Vice President and Director of Athletics, noted, “The 2025 football season has not lived up to our shared standards for Michigan State Football. While that does not fall solely on Jonathan Smith, it’s become necessary to make a coaching change to set a new direction for the program.”

Smith came to Michigan State in November 2023, after leading Oregon State to three straight bowl games. However, his record at MSU was 9-15 over two seasons.

MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed gratitude for Smith’s commitment and integrity. “This was not an easy decision,” he stated, thanking Smith for his service to student-athletes.

Batt emphasized the university’s commitment to enhancing the football program. He highlighted Michigan State’s proud history of achievements, including National Championships and Rose Bowl victories.

Looking ahead, Michigan State is set to start its search for a new head coach. The goal is to rebuild the football team and strive for future championships.
