Michigan State Women’s Basketball Shines in Thrilling Third Quarter to Secure Victory Over Rutgers

Grace VanSlooten was a star in the third quarter of the Michigan State women’s basketball game against Rutgers, helping lead her team to a 70-60 victory. This win marked the Spartans’ first road success in Big Ten play this season.

In a crucial third quarter, VanSlooten scored eight points. The Spartans outscored the Scarlet Knights 22 to 13 during this period, taking control after a tied halftime score of 33. Theryn Hallock capped off the quarter with a buzzer-beater, giving MSU a 55-46 lead, their largest of the game.

By the middle of the final quarter, the Spartans had built a 14-point cushion. Rutgers struggled, suffering their sixth consecutive loss. The Spartans, now standing at 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten, had three players score in double figures, showing a strong team effort despite shooting only 38% from the field.

Julia Ayrault and Emma Shumate led the scoring with 12 points each. Shumate’s performance was especially notable; all her points came in the first half, matching her season high. She shot well early on, making four of seven attempts, which helped MSU’s offense find its rhythm. Meanwhile, VanSlooten recorded a total of 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

For Rutgers, Destiny Adams was the top scorer with 15 points before fouling out. The team struggled overall, shooting just 35.1% and turning the ball over 22 times.
