Microsoft Aims for Universal USB-C: A Seamless Connection for Every PC

Microsoft has found that 27% of PCs with USB4 face a limited functionality issue. This happens when a user plugs in a USB-C device, but the PC doesn’t support a necessary feature. According to Microsoft’s Senior Product Manager Ugan Sivagnanenthirarajah, the problem isn’t the USB Type-C connector itself, but how different PC makers implement USB-C capabilities.

For a PC to fully utilize USB-C, Microsoft outlines some baseline requirements. Every USB-C port should support PC charging and allow for at least one external display. It should also provide a minimum of 4.5W of power to connected devices. However, Microsoft doesn’t require higher data transfer speeds or specific power levels for all USB-C ports. As a result, users can generally expect USB 3.x speeds, display output, and charging capabilities from any major Windows laptop.

Intel is still responsible for certifying Thunderbolt specifications. The latest Thunderbolt ports support all USB-C features, including high-speed data transfer and the ability to connect multiple 4K displays. Notably, any USB4 ports boasting high transfer speeds must also work with Thunderbolt 3 accessories. This integration provides users with added flexibility in their device choices.

The Windows Hardware Certification Program (WHCP) offers automated tools that PC manufacturers can use to ensure smooth functioning with Windows. This program helps Microsoft gather data to pinpoint and resolve issues across the Windows ecosystem. One major benefit of WHCP is the requirement for USB-C ports to rely on Windows’ built-in USB drivers. This means that any fixes can be pushed out through Windows Update, simplifying troubleshooting for users and manufacturers alike.

Interestingly, a recent survey found that nearly 60% of consumers prefer USB-C over older connectors due to its versatility. This shift highlights the necessity for better industry standards and more consistent implementation. With USB-C becoming the standard, clear expectations and shared specifications could lead to a better user experience overall.
