The Florida Atlantic softball team faced a tough challenge on Wednesday night, losing 5-2 to FIU. Despite racking up 12 hits, the Owls couldn’t overcome a strong performance from the Panthers.

In the first inning, Florida Atlantic took an early lead. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Kylie Hammonds kicked things off with a single. Shortly after, Jesiana Mora, the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, hit a double, bringing in the first run. Yani Guzman followed up with another run, putting the Owls ahead 2-0.

However, FIU quickly responded. They tied the game in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a two-run double in the third inning. They added another run in the fourth, ending the scoring at 5-2.

Freshman Destiny Johns made an impact, getting on base with back-to-back singles, but Florida Atlantic couldn’t turn those opportunities into runs. Hammonds continued her impressive season with her second hit of the game, maintaining an incredible streak of reaching base in 34 out of 38 games.

It’s worth noting that Mora has been on fire lately, racking up 11 RBIs in her last four games. Kiley Channell also shone, extending her hitting streak to eight games.

Florida Atlantic now prepares for a big three-game series against South Florida, another top team in the AAC. This matchup is crucial as the Owls look to rebound from their recent loss.

In sports, recovery is key, and the Owls will need to harness their skills and teamwork to achieve success in the series ahead.
