Mikko’s Day Shines Bright in Dallas: Is the Stars’ Superstar Just Warming Up?

Mikko Rantanen’s incredible scoring streak finally came to an end after 13 days. Fans at the American Airlines Center were treated to an exciting game as the Dallas Stars defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 in Game 3 of the playoffs.

It was a festive afternoon, especially for Mother’s Day, but in Dallas, it often feels like every game is dedicated to Rantanen. Stars coach Pete DeBoer expressed his admiration, saying, "It’s the best performance I’ve witnessed on my team for this long. He’s just getting started. He’s on a mission."

Rantanen’s influence was undeniable. He may not have contributed to the Stars’ second goal, which marked the end of his scoring streak, but he still shined with a goal and two assists. This puts him at nine goals and nine assists, leading the league with 17 points in six games. Remarkably, one of those games saw Dallas get shut out!

His goal was crucial, notably following a lengthy video review that deemed a teammate’s earlier goal valid despite a potential kicking motion. This review was tense, but it didn’t seem to affect Rantanen. Just 49 seconds later, he dazzled the defense, scoring again and pushing Dallas ahead decisively.

Rantanen humorously credited the video delay for helping him regroup. “I guess everybody got some rest,” he said. He’s been on fire, breaking Mario Lemieux’s record by scoring or assisting on 13 consecutive goals, which is quite a feat in the world of hockey. His average scoring rate during playoffs now ranks him fourth among active players, alongside stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

The Stars are on a roll, having not lost back-to-back postseason games recently. Their strategy of winning all odd-numbered games has been effective, and it gives them momentum as they aim for another playoff series victory.

However, Winnipeg has its challenges, particularly with goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Known for his regular-season performance, Hellebuyck has struggled in the playoffs, historically faltering at crucial times. After allowing 16 goals in three games against St. Louis in the first round, he again faced difficulty against Dallas, surrendering five goals in this latest outing. His postseason record remains a concern for the Jets.

For the Stars, contributions were widespread, with Roope Hintz and Wyatt Johnston also getting on the scoreboard. The team showcased its depth, proving that while Rantanen may be the star, there are plenty of other key players.

If Dallas keeps this up, the Jets will need a miracle to mount a comeback. Will the pressure get to Hellebuyck and his teammates? Time will tell.
