Milan’s local coffee shop and community hub, The Owl, Morning ‘til Night, recently raised an impressive $7,834 in a fundraiser for two local charities, Aid In Milan and Compassion Ministry. This event, held on December 15, was organized by owner Ryan Wilman, who aimed to give back in a meaningful way.
Wilman wanted the community to join the effort, making it more than just a check donation. He expressed the sentiment that everyone, even those with tight budgets, could enjoy a fun evening out while contributing to a great cause. “It’s important for people to feel part of something big,” he said.
The community responded enthusiastically. Residents flocked to The Owl, where local businesses joined in. State Farm’s Phillip Cook Branch matched the first $1,000 raised, while Victory Chevrolet and Imperial Beverages also contributed. Sara Bearman of S’Mac and Cheese donated $1,520 from her sales on that day, emphasizing the strong support from local vendors.
“This event was fantastic,” Bearman noted. The lines stretched despite the cold, showing just how committed the community was. People came together, not just to enjoy food and drinks but to support their neighbors in need.
Notably, Alyssa Bolton drove from Dexter with her kids to reconnect with friends and back the cause. “Even though we’ve been away for a year, it felt like coming home. The community spirit remains strong,” she said.
Wilman indicated that despite the costs involved, the success meant absorbing those expenses to maximize donations. “It was all about giving,” he emphasized.
### Rising Demand for Assistance
Andrew Felder, Executive Director of Aid In Milan, shared that the need for food assistance has surged by 60% recently. Factors like government shut-downs and cuts to SNAP benefits have put additional strain on families. Aid In Milan has also partnered with local churches to provide meals and essential items.
Felder expressed gratitude for the robust community support. “It’s not only about food donations; financial contributions help keep our programs running,” he noted.
The Owl’s commitment to giving back is ongoing, with a portion of their sales on the third Friday of each month also benefiting Aid In Milan. Other businesses, like the retired Plum Tree Yarn Shop, have similarly stepped up, donating over $6,000 from their final sales.
Bearman summarized the spirit behind the fundraising efforts: “We believe in supporting our community and the great work organizations like Aid in Milan do. If we can utilize one night of sales to help, we absolutely will.”
In a time of increased demand, such grassroots efforts highlight the strength of community ties in Milan. When businesses and residents unite, they can significantly uplift those facing hardships. This ethos of mutual support not only brings comfort but also fosters a sense of belonging in challenging times.
