What a night for the Altoona Lady Lions basketball team! They celebrated their 1,000th program win with a stunning 68-23 victory over Chambersburg at the Altoona Fieldhouse. The excitement filled the air as nearly 60 former Lady Lions gathered for a halftime ceremony to honor this impressive milestone.
Highlights from the evening included senior Melana Eyer scoring her own 1,000th career point just as the second quarter began. “We always talk as a team that the program is bigger than each one of us,” said Coach Chris Fleegle. The crowd cheered as Eyer made her mark in history.
Many familiar faces were present, including former coaches Mark Sapita, Craig Long, and Miriam Colledge. The Altoona girls basketball program started back in 1969 with Barbara Johnson, and Art Taneyhill took the reins in 1976, contributing significantly to the overall wins: he had 471 victories during his tenure.
Reflecting on the event, Colledge, who coached from 2015 to 2019 and was responsible for 80 wins, shared her emotional connection. “It’s so special to see everyone and celebrate our shared history,” she said.
Another former player, Kristi (Little) Kaack, now a coach herself, expressed her gratitude. “Playing for Altoona was a phenomenal experience, and I treasure those years,” she noted. It was heartwarming to see the tradition of excellence continue resonating within the community.
During the ceremony, all four of the school’s PIAA championship trophies were displayed, showcasing the team’s success over the years. Athletic Director Phil Riccio praised the community’s support, saying, “It takes a community to achieve this milestone. Every young girl looks up to you.”
After a strong first quarter, leading 21-5, Eyer’s milestone moment reflected the continuous growth of the program. She described the night as a celebration of their rich history and the positive culture they have built. Coach Fleegle praised her dedication over the past four years, noting, “She always wanted to improve without any negativity.”
Brionna Hudson stood out in the game with 16 points, while Eyer contributed 15. Altoona is making waves this season with an impressive 16-2 record, gearing up for their next challenge against Cumberland Valley.
Overall, the night was not just about numbers but celebrating the shared journey of players, coaches, and the community. The legacy of the Altoona Lady Lions continues, fueled by a rich history and bright future.
