Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Progressive Care Unit (HVPCU) has received the Silver-Level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). This honor highlights outstanding patient care, strong clinical results, and a supportive workplace.
The HVPCU has held its Beacon status since 2015. Abby Rudy, the vice president of Nursing Critical Care Services, emphasized how this award reflects the team’s daily commitment to patients and their work environment.
Several programs helped the unit earn this award. A robust mentorship initiative, an improved orientation process, and a focus on staff recognition played key roles. Importantly, the unit went 435 days without a fall resulting in injury, a significant accomplishment that contributed to their recognition.
With a commitment to nurturing a welcoming culture, nearly 69% of HVPCU’s nurses hold professional certifications, which is notably higher than the AACN national average of 38%. The team is dedicated to supporting each other’s growth and often mentors students entering healthcare.
Research shows that healthcare environments prioritizing staff wellness enhance patient outcomes. A study by the AACN found that units with high staff morale see a 21% improvement in patient satisfaction scores. This data underscores why the HVPCU’s initiatives are not just beneficial for the team—they also lead to better care for patients.
In today’s healthcare climate, where support and professional development are more important than ever, the HVPCU sets a positive example. Their commitment to excellence and collaboration can serve as a model for other units aiming to improve patient care.
