Recent polls reveal a deep divide among Americans regarding the shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The Trump administration’s defense of this incident faced significant public backlash.
A Quinnipiac University poll showed that 53% of registered voters believe the shooting was unjustified. Most Democrats and around 60% of independents shared this view, while over 75% of Republicans thought it was justified. Similarly, a CNN poll found that 56% of Americans labeled the shooting an inappropriate use of force, with only 26% supporting it as appropriate. Furthermore, about half of the audience felt this incident highlighted larger issues within ICE operations.
Concerns about ICE’s role are growing. The CNN poll indicated that 51% of respondents felt ICE actions were making cities less safe, particularly among Democrats. In contrast, 67% of Republicans viewed ICE efforts positively.
Public trust in government investigations is low. Sixty-two percent of Americans reported they had little to no confidence in the federal government’s ability to conduct a fair investigation. Nearly half expressed no trust at all.
Overall, these polls demonstrate a significant split in opinions about law enforcement’s conduct and ICE’s influence on community safety. Political scientists suggest that the ongoing debate reflects broader tensions between immigration policy and public safety perceptions, emphasizing shifting attitudes in a polarized political environment.
