Minneapolis Police Chief Resigns Amid Investigation Controversy: Insights from the Mayor | CNN

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has resigned rather than face disciplinary action for interfering with an investigation into his conduct, according to Mayor Jacob Frey. O’Hara was under scrutiny for allegations involving inappropriate relationships with city employees. Although those claims weren’t proven, the investigation found he obstructed the inquiry.

The mayor revealed that O’Hara deleted a contact from his city-issued phone and disclosed details about the investigation to another employee, which added to the case against him. Frey emphasized that maintaining public trust was crucial for the city, stating, “Trust is not secondary to the job. It is the job.”

Despite resigning, O’Hara still has 17 open complaints against him unrelated to the recent investigation. The mayor’s office did not disclose details about these complaints.

O’Hara became chief in 2022, taking the lead during a critical time for the Minneapolis Police Department, following the murder of George Floyd by an officer. This event sparked worldwide protests and heightened discussions about police reform and accountability. In response, Minneapolis entered an agreement with the federal government to change its training and use-of-force policies, although this agreement was canceled shortly after by the U.S. Department of Justice.

O’Hara’s time in the role included managing the response to the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School last August and facing criticism for the police’s involvement in federal immigration actions. His resignation adds another twist to an organization already at the center of national conversations about police practices.

Currently, Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell will lead the department as they search for a new chief. This period of transition continues to reflect the challenges and expectations of law enforcement in a changing societal landscape.
