Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old who fell onto the field during a Pirates game at PNC Park, is awake and making progress, according to Jennifer Phillips, who runs his GoFundMe page.

Markwood, a former college football player, was admitted to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. His recovery has surprised many. “This progress feels miraculous,” Phillips shared on the GoFundMe. “He still has a long journey ahead, but today brought a glimmer of hope.”

Phillips expressed gratitude for the support, saying, “Thank you all for your prayers and generosity. Please keep him in your thoughts as he moves into the next stage of recovery.” The GoFundMe has raised over $28,000, showcasing the community’s support.

Pirates chairman Bob Nutting expressed his sadness, saying, “We are devastated. Pirates baseball is about community. In tough times like these, we need to stand together and support each other.” He also urged fans to keep Markwood and his family in their prayers, while thanking first responders for their quick action.

An investigation by the Pirates looked into the incident, interviewing fans and analyzing credit card transactions from Markwood’s group. They found that while he did not purchase alcohol himself, he had consumed beers bought by others at the game, according to a report by the Associated Press.
