BANGKOK — Fátima Bosch Fernández from Mexico has been crowned Miss Universe 2025, a remarkable achievement for the 25-year-old amid a chaotic event overshadowed by controversy. Bosch faced public bullying from one of the hosts, which added drama to the already intense competition.
The first runner-up was Thailand’s Praveenar Singh, 29, and third place went to Stephany Adriana Abasali Nasser from Venezuela, 25. Fourth place was claimed by Ahtisa Manalo, 28, from the Philippines, and Olivia Yacé, 27, from Ivory Coast, rounded out the top five.
The negativity this year stemmed from host Nawat Itsaragrisil reprimanding Bosch for not complying with certain promotional activities. Bosch left the room in protest, joined by several contestants, including Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig from Denmark.
Bosch told reporters, “What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb. If it takes away your dignity, you need to go.” The president of the Miss Universe Organization, Raúl Rocha Cantú, labeled Nawat’s actions as “public aggression” and “serious abuse.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Bosch for standing up for herself, stating, “It is an example of how women should raise our voices.” She further emphasized the importance of women speaking out for their rights, challenging the outdated belief that silence equals beauty.
Nawat later apologized, appearing both contrite and defiant. He said, “If anyone was affected and not comfortable, I am so sorry.” However, he quickly moved on, telling contestants, “It’s passed. OK? Are you happy?”
Bosch’s background is impressive. She studied fashion in Mexico and Italy and is passionate about sustainability. She has volunteered for various causes, including mental health and environmental issues.
This year’s pageant wasn’t without its criticisms. Reports indicated that two judges resigned, hinting at possible rigging, a claim denied by the organizers. Thai police are also investigating alleged links to illegal online casinos related to the event’s promotion.
Mishaps have often plagued the Miss Universe pageant. For instance, the 2021 competition faced backlash for being held in Israel, which upset many supporters of the Palestinian cause.
