Mizzou softball faced a tough game on Wednesday, February 11, falling to UCF with a score of 5-1 in Orlando, Florida. The Tigers began strong, with freshman Addy Waits driving in a run through a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. That would be their only run, scored by sophomore Madison Uptegrove.
Senior pitcher Cierra Harrison held off hits until the fourth inning but faced challenges when UCF came around for a second time. After giving up a solo home run and a single, she was replaced by junior Marissa McCann. Unfortunately, McCann also struggled, allowing a home run to the first batter she faced. UCF tacked on more runs with a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, pushing the score to 5-1.
Despite the loss, Mizzou had a few bright spots. Junior Nathalie Touchet made her season debut, managing to keep UCF hitless in her inning. Six Tigers got hits, including junior Abby Hay, who had both a single and a walk. Notably, freshman Gracie Britton earned her first collegiate hit as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.
This loss marks some interesting trends for Mizzou. The Tigers now sit at 2-4 for the season. Under coach Larissa Anderson, their all-time record stands at 374-223-1. This match also tied the series against UCF at three wins each.
As the season progresses, Mizzou has outscored opponents 7-6 in the fifth inning this year. However, this was the first time they allowed a run during that inning since their opening match against Penn State.
Looking ahead, the Tigers are set to compete in the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational, starting with a game against NC State on Friday, February 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
