Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, recently shared insights about FromSoftware’s upcoming game, The Duskbloods, announced for the Nintendo Switch 2. While this title emphasizes multiplayer elements, Miyazaki assured fans that the studio remains committed to its single-player roots.
The Duskbloods began as a concept for the original Nintendo Switch before Nintendo suggested it be developed for their new console. Miyazaki expressed his fascination with the PvPvE (Player versus Player versus Environment) genre. He believes this structure allows for creative gameplay while utilizing what they’ve learned from designing tough opponents.
"It’s an interesting approach," he noted, "but this doesn’t signal a shift for us towards multiplayer games exclusively." FromSoftware still plans to make single-player experiences, as reflected in their announcement for a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring.
In this new game, players will explore a vibrant world with over a dozen customizable characters. Miyazaki described a character from the trailer—a rat-like creature—similar to the fire keepers from Dark Souls, who will guide players in a central hub area.
Interestingly, Miyazaki also added a playful twist, saying, "We wanted to try something Nintendo-esque.” He chuckled, revealing that this character is “actually an elderly gentleman,” showcasing the lighthearted approach they aimed for in this title.
The Duskbloods is set for release in 2026. As gaming evolves, it’s essential to recognize trends and user preferences. According to a recent survey by the Entertainment Software Association, around 70% of gamers still prefer single-player experiences over multiplayer ones, indicating a robust demand for narrative-driven games.
In short, while The Duskbloods explores new territory for FromSoftware, fans can rest easy knowing that the spirit of solo adventures isn’t going anywhere. The studio is carving its path in a changing landscape while honoring its legacy.
