Mizoram Achieves Historic Milestone: Becomes India’s First Fully Literate State with 98.2% Literacy Rate!

Mizoram Takes the Lead in Literacy

Mizoram has just made history! The Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, announced that the state is now fully literate. This achievement marks Mizoram as the first state in India to reach full literacy status.

During a recent celebration in Aizawl, the Minister of Education revealed this exciting news. Mizoram, a state that gained autonomy in 1987, covers an area of about 21,081 square kilometers. Based on the 2011 Census, it had a literacy rate of 91.33%, placing it third in the country. To build on this strong foundation, the ULLAS (New India Literacy Programme) was launched to help educate those who had not yet learned to read or write.

In August and September 2023, a door-to-door survey identified 3,026 individuals who still needed literacy support. Of those, 1,692 were actively participating in learning activities. This commitment helped Mizoram surpass a 95% literacy rate, which is the benchmark for full literacy set by the Ministry of Education. By the latest survey in 2023-24, Mizoram’s literacy rate stands at an impressive 98.20%.

A remarkable group of 292 volunteers played a key role in this success. These volunteers included students, educators, and local resource persons. They embody the Mizo culture’s strong sense of community and duty, known as Kartavya Bodh, which highlights the importance of collective effort in achieving common goals.

The ULLAS initiative is significant as it aims to provide education to adults aged 15 and above who missed out on formal schooling. It is part of a broader effort aligned with the National Education Policy of 2020. The program consists of five key areas: Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Critical Life Skills, Basic Education, Vocational Skills, and Continuing Education.

In the context of national trends, Mizoram’s achievement is a shining example. According to recent data, over 1.77 crore learners across India have participated in foundational literacy assessments organized by ULLAS. The initiative has seen the registration of more than 2.37 crore learners and 40.84 lakh volunteer teachers through its mobile app.

Interestingly, Mizoram follows Ladakh, which was the first administrative entity to announce full literacy back in June 2024. The progress in both regions showcases how community involvement can lead to significant educational advancements, setting a standard for other states to follow.

As more states aim for similar literacy goals, Mizoram stands as a beacon, demonstrating what can be achieved through commitment and community spirit.
