Major League Baseball recently suspended right-handed pitcher Abner Uribe for one game due to inappropriate actions towards the Cardinals’ dugout during a game against the Brewers. The incident took place in the eighth inning after Uribe struck out Alec Burleson. He made a gesture that some fans might recognize from wrestling.
Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy expressed that Uribe’s actions were unacceptable. Following the game, Uribe issued apologies to his teammates but did not extend that to the Cardinals. Instead, he criticized St. Louis manager Oli Marmol, suggesting Marmol had implied threats against Milwaukee players.
This isn’t Uribe’s first suspension. He was previously involved in a brawl between the Brewers and the Rays in 2024, which resulted in a six-game suspension initially. After an appeal, it was reduced to four games.
When a player is suspended, their team cannot replace them on the roster. If Uribe’s appeal is denied or if he decides to drop it, the Brewers will have to play one game short-handed. Interestingly, for brief suspensions like this one, players sometimes drop appeals to avoid being unavailable for future games.
According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, sportsmanship in professional sports is a growing concern among fans. Over 60% of respondents expressed that player behavior has worsened over the years, citing instances of unsportsmanlike conduct in various sports. As MLB continues to crack down on player behavior, it’s likely that we will see stricter consequences for similar incidents in the future.
